Lone Wolf and Cub Serie

Ik heb dit weekend, zo'n kleine 40 jaar na dato de gehele Lone Wolf and Cub series bekeken en ik moet zeggen, het was een geweldige ervaring.
Mijn eerste kennismaking met Ogami Itto en zijn zoon stamt uit 1983. Shogun Assassin was de film. Een video nasty die mij, dankzij de creatieve moordpartijen en metershoge bloedfontijnen, enthousiast maakte voor het genre. Ik was er in de loop der tijd wel eens op gewezen dat het hier ging om een verknipte Amerikaanse versie van de Lone wolf en Cub reeks, maar toch werd mijn interesse in de serie niet echt getrokken. Ik kende de bloederige hoogtepunten immers al en daar was waar het mij vooral om te doen.


Afgelopen week tikte ik voor een mooi prijsje de hele reeks op laserdisc op de kop. 

Zoals gezegd heb ik ze afgelopen weekend bekeken en wat me naast de hoge vermakelijkheidsfactor vooral opviel is de enorme invloed die de reeks gehad moet hebben om het Amerikaanse filmlandschap. Tal van situaties en personages, die ik kende uit de geweldscinema van de jaren 70, 80 en de films van Tarantino passeerden de revue. Zo heeft onze wrekende Samurai veel weg van Mr. Vigilante en Dirty Harry, die ook onverstoord het boevenpak aanhoren al voor ze hun lot bezegelen. Meest in het oogspringend vond ik de grote gelijkenis tussen de drie master of Deaths en de Three Storms uit Big Trouble in Little China, een andere favoriet van mij.

En natuurlijk is Kill Bill in wezen een grote ode aan vooral deze film, verweven met nog vele andere klassiekers, maar de heerlijke combinatie van pulpy verkrachtingscenes, bloederige zwaardgevechten en een bedrogen wreker, inclusief het piepende waterrad komt allemaal voort uit deze reeks. Nu kan ik mij vergissen, maar ik ken geen films van voor 1972 die deze elementen op zo'n bloederige wijze samen brengen en dat maakt deze reeks waarschijnlijk de oorsprong van de excessieve geweldscinema die ik zo kan waarderen. 


Wat ook opviel was dat de serie zich ook per aflevering goed weet te vernieuwen. Ligt in de delen een en twee de nadruk op de bloedfontijnen, gaat deel drie vooral los met brute verkrachtingen, wordt in deel 5 de opdracht in delen gegeven en voegt deel zes er een bovennatuurlijk tintje aan toe en gaat het los met een actiescene in de sneeuw waar Sommige james Bond films (en Inception) een puntje aan kunnen zuigen. Maar bovenal is het ook het meest geweldige duo dat de cinema heeft voortgebracht.

Becoming a movie freak...

I became a movie freak back in 1981 when I first saw the poster of Escape from New York at the local cinema. That guy with an eye-patch and the head of Lady Liberty in the middle of the streets was by far the coolest visual I had ever seen. But the movie was 16+ and I was only 13 and very short, so now way I would get past the usher. But I had become a film freak. Before that I had not seen many movies. The Dutch TV only had two (black and white) channels and my parent only took us to the cinema once or twice a year at birthday parties. The biggest thing I had seen was Grease, which I liked a lot, who didn't at that time. But like I said, till that moment cinema was hardly a topic in my life. But it would be from that moment on.

Another great poster from that time, that I liked a lot was Scanners, especially the tag line:
10 seconds: The Pain Begins 

15 seconds: You Can't Breath

20 seconds: You Explode

Wow, I had to see that, but again, no way I would get in.

Luckily VHS came along and it would only take 2 more years of waiting before I could finally see what they were all about. And I was not disappointed. Escape Form New York is still one of my all time favorites and I'm a big fan of the works of Cronenberg & Carpenter. 

A third poster that really got me exited was Death Ship. It took over 25 years to finally see it and even though it was a low buget movie and not to well made I really liked it. I still love the atmosphere of those 80's horrorflicks.

Alligator completely blow me away, I was sure 16+ rated pictures would be my favorites. I loved the horror, suspense and violence. 

Well, I guess that is how it happened....

Hail Hail Halloween

Today is Halloween. A great day to launch my blog. Why? Because it will all be about movies and John Carpenter's Halloween is one of my favorites. Saw it at least a dozen times and have owned many different versions on VHS, Laserdisc, DVD and Blu-Ray. Will post some pictures of my laserdisc collection here soon. It's still the best format to own movies, not to watch, I have to admit, but nothing beats the artwork of a laserdisc.

Back to Halloween. Saw it for the first time somewhere in the beginning of the 80's and taped the whole soundtrack on to an audio cassette (this was before we had a VHS), so I could actually listen to Halloween. And that is almost as scary as watching the movie. It scared the hell out of my kid sister and made me realize how important sound and sound design is to a movie.
